On the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Second World War’s final year, the Second World War Research Group, in collaboration with the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, is hosting a workshop to examine the global impact of the war. In the spirit of the Research Group’s mission to break war history out of its narrow national siloes, this second annual workshop will host innovative new work from invited scholars and graduate students across the United States and Canada, linking topics and charting unexplored vistas of the most devastating transnational conflict of the twentieth century. Panels will include: Gender, Violence, and Power (featuring Claire Cookson-Hills of Queen’s University and Vojin Majstorovic of the University of North Texas); Reimagining the Pacific Space (Robert Engen of the Canadian Forces College and Phillip Rutherford of Marshall University); Occupation, Race, and Exploitation (Eden Knudsen-McLean of Auburn University and Jeff Rutherford of Xavier University), and a special graduate student panel (Alexis Laguna from the University of New Orleans, Cameron Zinsou from Mississippi State, and Jennifer Popowycz from Louisiana State). Opening remarks will be by Robert Citino, director of the Institute for the Study of War and Democracy at the National WWII Museum, and the General Raymond E. Mason Jr. Distinguished Lecture on World War II will be given by Michael Neiberg of the U.S. Army War College. The workshop will be held at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans and will be open to visitors to the museum. The event begins with a reception and the Mason Lecture on September 12th, followed by the main workshop on 13 September.
